Are you dating a person or their lifestyle?

Dubai is a city where lifestyle can be very visible.

You meet someone successful. They have an impressive career, beautiful home, great restaurants, frequent travel, an interesting social circle, and a lifestyle that looks incredibly attractive from the outside.

And there is nothing wrong with being attracted to ambition or success.

But sometimes I encourage my clients to ask themselves a slightly uncomfortable question:

Am I attracted to this person, or am I attracted to the life they represent?

Because those are not necessarily the same thing.

A lifestyle can create attraction

Success is attractive. Confidence is attractive. Ambition is attractive. Financial stability can be attractive too.

The problem comes when the lifestyle becomes more important than the person.

You may overlook poor communication because they are successful. You may excuse inconsistency because they are busy. You may tolerate emotional unavailability because they take you to beautiful places and give you experiences you enjoy.

Slowly, you can find yourself becoming attached to everything surrounding the relationship while ignoring what is actually happening inside it.

And eventually, you have to come back to the person.

Because you are not building a relationship with their apartment, their car, their passport, or their Instagram feed.

You are building a relationship with them.

Who are they without the extras?

Here is a little exercise I sometimes recommend.

Take away the lifestyle.

No business-class flights. No expensive dinners. No beautiful apartment. No impressive title. No glamorous weekends.

Now imagine sitting across from this person in a simple café on an ordinary Tuesday afternoon.

Would you still want to spend three hours talking to them?

Would you still respect them?

Would you feel safe with them?

Would you admire their character?

Would you enjoy their company if nobody else could see the relationship?

Those questions can be surprisingly revealing.

Are You Dating a Person or Their Lifestyle?

Success tells you something, but not everything

Someone’s professional success can absolutely tell you something about them. It may reflect ambition, discipline, intelligence, creativity, or determination.

But professional success does not automatically equal relationship compatibility.

Someone can build an extraordinary company and still struggle with emotional intimacy.

Someone can be financially generous and emotionally inconsistent.

Someone can be incredibly accomplished and have no idea how to communicate during conflict.

The qualities that make someone successful professionally are not always the qualities that make them a good partner.

When you are dating, you need to look at both.

Fall for the person you would still choose on an ordinary day

There is nothing wrong with enjoying a beautiful lifestyle with your partner. In fact, it can be wonderful.

But the lifestyle should complement the relationship, not become the reason for it.

Pay attention to the qualities that remain when the excitement disappears: character, integrity, emotional maturity, kindness, communication, consistency, values, and the ability to build something together.

Because eventually every relationship has ordinary days.

There will be quiet Tuesdays. Stressful weeks. Difficult conversations. Plans that change. Moments when neither of you looks particularly glamorous.

And those are the moments when you discover whether you actually chose the person.

So enjoy the beautiful dinners. Enjoy the travel. Enjoy everything Dubai has to offer.

Just make sure you are falling in love with the person sitting across the table.

A lifestyle can make someone interesting. Character is what makes someone worth building a life with.
